[Momentary Momentum]
9/28/21

Cheek in palm; head resting for a moment; I feel
you relent with what I mistook as certainty.

Clumsily, I reach out only to find fragments of
human connection; hardly scraping by with what
you mistook for a passion of necessity.

For a moment — I feel myself slipping.

These half-hearted interactions poorly disguised
as something meaningful have been demeaning
all that I have to offer.

This time, I had no expectations, no moments of
pathetic desperation, no impulse to chase an old
dog barking up a storm over how many new tricks
he’s learned since our last endeavors and —

I’m starting to realize the only change
that has taken place is how much more
I value myself, my time, and how careful
I’ve become with whom I allow into my life.

I’m starting to realize that you
aren’t worth very much
to anything of mine.
